The Cape York region comprises Cape York Peninsula which is situated in Far North Qld 2 670 km n-w of Brisbane. Cape York sits at the peninsula’s tip and is the northernmost point on the Australian mainland. The Peninsula covers about 137 000 sq km and its population is made up mostly of Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders. New Guinea sits 140 km to its north while to the west is the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Coral Sea is to the east. Important towns in the region are Cooktown, Weipa, Bamaga and Laura and main industries include tourism (May-Nov), mining, cattle and fishing. There are numerous national parks on the Pensinsula - Jardine River, Mungkan Kandju, Lakefield, Staaten River.
