Jindabyne is a new Snowy Mountains town located 462 km s-w of Sydney. The original one was flooded by the Snowy Mountains Authority (1960s) to make way for the major hyrdro-electric scheme. Modern day Jindabyne sits on Lake Jindabyne and continues to be important for its proximity to the Snowy Mountains ski resorts and for trout fishing. European settlement began in 1820s helped by a brief goldrush and Rainbow trout having been released into the Snowy River (1894). Tiny East Jindabyne nearby is located above the old flooded town and some of its road still leads into the lake! Snowy Mts Trout Festival (Nov), Man From Snowy River Rodeo (Dec).

Snowy Valley Lookout (8 km north). Wallace Craigie Lookout (40 km s-w). The Alpine Way a delightful road opened in 1956 which winds its way through the Snowy Mountains to Khancoban and offers some superb views along the way. Perisher Blue (30 km west) Australia’s largest ski resort offering over 1 000 ha of skiing terrain and excellent facilities. Xtreme Winter Games (Sept). Charlotte's Pass (45 km west) the country’s highest ski resort for experienced skiers and in summer, enjoy a scenic 24 km walking track past Blue Lake.
