Mount Kosciuszko is Australia’s highest mountain (2 228 m) located within the Snowy Mts about 500 km s-w of Sydney. The Kosciuszko NP (647 000 ha) contains Australia’s highest peaks, the Snowy River and numerous ski fields. During warmer months, popular pursuits include exploring Yarrangobilly Caves, taking one of the many Alpine walking trails and dipping into thermal pools. Early Polish explorer Paul Strzelecki named Mt Kosciuszko to honour Polish leader Tadeusz Kosciuszko.
