Comments[0] North West WA

North West WA

North West WA is a vast region taking in the magnificent Pilbara and Kimberley sub regions. The area spans from Onslow (south) to Kununurra (north) and the centerpiece of the Pilbara is the 300 km long Hamersley Range extending eastwards towards the mining towns of Tom Price and Newman and through the Karijini NP. The Pilbara islands lying just 20 min offshore are a marine life haven with dolphins, turtles and humpback whales. Further north sits the rugged and remote Kimberley wilderness covering an area of over 420 000 sq km (3 times the size of England). The Kimberley is famed for its excellent Aboriginal art, rocky gorges, vast desert & unspoilt beaches. Of particular note here is Geikie Gorge NP, Purnululu NP (home of the unique Bungle Bungle Range) and Wolfe Creek Crater, the world’s 2nd largest meteorite crater (850 m wide). The two distinct seasons here are the Wet (Nov-Mar) and Dry (Apr-Oct) which very much affect travel conditions. Towns of importance include Port Hedland, Broome, Derby and Wyndham.
