Victorian High Country
High Country Vic
The High Country is a splendid Alpine region in Victoria’s North East. Whether it be first class snow skiing together with a host of other sporting activities, a heritage rich in gold, bushrangers/horsemen, a gourmet food and wine trail or spectacular national parks and landscapes, it’s all here. An ideal way to cover this region is via the Great Alpine Road between Wangaratta and Omeo a distance of 250 km. Some of the area’s best ski resorts are located at Mount Buller, Mt Hotham, Falls Creek while a number of the excellent wineries specializing in fortified wines can be found at Rutherglen complemented by Milawa’s famous cheese factory. The high country's historic towns include Glenrowan (where famous bushranger Ned Kelly died) and Beechworth (well preserved National Trust gold mining town) whilst the national parks of great interest are Lake Eidon, Alpine, Mount Buffalo.
