Werribee is situated on the Werribee River merely 31 km s-w of Melbourne. This city and suburb are now part of the residential and industrial spread of Melbourne’s outer metropolitan area. The city’s RAAF base is the world’s oldest continually operating military base and the renowned Werribee Park and Mansion (1870s) are located nearby. Also not to be missed in this area are the You Yangs, dramatic granite peaks rising to 352 m amidst the Werribee lava plains. The Aboriginal name means ‘big mountain in the middle of a plain’.
