Western Australian Islands
WA’s islands comprise a number of large groups of small islands dotting the vast coastline with only a few that tourists can access. The South West coast near Esperance is home to about 100 islands rich in wildlife such as fur seals, penguins and birdlife. One of the group, Woody Island offers basic camping facilities. West of Perth, apart from Rottnest, there are Garden, Penguin and Seal Islands. The state’s Central West coast has the Houtman Abrolhos Islands numbering about 100 tiny islands. Day trips are available to see the spectacular birdlife and coral found here that accounted for a number of shipwrecks in earlier years. Travelling north along the North-West coast, there are several groups of islands including the Montebello, Muiron and Dampier Archipelago popular with game fishermen. WA’s North coast and the Kimberley area are home to several islands including Cockatoo where there is a resort. Also nearby are Adele, Augustus, Bigge and the Heywood Islands.
